Skills and subagents
Skills
Section titled “Skills”Skills load according to their invocation flags. Eligible skills can load automatically; manual-only skills require explicit invocation. Skills inherit the caller’s model/tools, not a new agent identity or permissions. See Repository Slash Prompts for Local adapters and manual Host entries.
apex-agent-authoring
Section titled “apex-agent-authoring”Creates, restructures, and audits Copilot agents while keeping enforceable
rules in thin authoring instructions and optional guidance on demand. Owns agent fleet
and .github authoring assessments; each produces a plan and stops before edits.
Assessment design history is reference-only. Supplied runtime profiles inform scores,
but log capture and context audits remain with apex-context-management.
Use the apex-agent-authoring skill to reduce the fixed context cost of.github/agents/03-architect.agent.md without changing its runtime contract.apex-azure-defaults
Section titled “apex-azure-defaults”Provides regions, tags, naming conventions, AVM module references, and security baselines. Relevant agents read it under their task instructions. Effective Azure Policy takes precedence over fallback defaults.
@workspace What are the default required tags from apex-azure-defaults?apex-python-diagrams
Section titled “apex-python-diagrams”Generates architecture diagrams and WAF/cost/compliance charts with Python.
Generate an architecture diagram for infra/bicep/my-project/ using apex-python-diagrams.apex-azure-bicep-patterns
Section titled “apex-azure-bicep-patterns”Provides reusable Bicep patterns: hub-spoke networking, private endpoints, diagnostic settings, conditional deployments, and AVM module composition.
@workspace Show me the private endpoint pattern from apex-azure-bicep-patterns.apex-terraform-patterns
Section titled “apex-terraform-patterns”Provides reusable Terraform patterns: hub-spoke networking, private endpoints, diagnostic settings, AVM-TF module composition, and known AVM pitfalls.
@workspace Show me the hub-spoke pattern from apex-terraform-patterns.apex-azure-diagnostics
Section titled “apex-azure-diagnostics”KQL templates, metric thresholds, health checks, and remediation playbooks
for diagnosing Azure resource issues, including AKS, VM connectivity, App Service
and messaging troubleshooting guides. Its helper scripts only read state, except the
AKS Inspektor Gadget trace, which runs only with explicit approval. AKS design questions
belong to apex-azure-kubernetes.
@workspace What KQL queries are available in apex-azure-diagnostics?apex-azure-kubernetes
Section titled “apex-azure-kubernetes”Day-0 AKS design advice: Automatic or Standard, networking, identity, observability, node pools, autoscaling and Spot. It inspects existing clusters read-only and hands cluster changes to the IaC agents. 03-Architect and 05-IaC Planner read it when AKS is in scope.
Use apex-azure-kubernetes to compare AKS Automatic and Standard for a production API.apex-azure-reliability
Section titled “apex-azure-reliability”Read-only reliability assessment for App Service and Azure Functions: zone redundancy, zone-redundant storage, health probes and multi-region failover. It returns findings that 08-As-Built and 09-Diagnose write into their existing artifacts. It never applies fixes or deploys.
Use apex-azure-reliability to assess zone redundancy and failover for rg-myapp-prod.apex-azure-upgrade
Section titled “apex-azure-upgrade”Assesses in-Azure upgrades of existing workloads: Functions Consumption to Flex Consumption, and Azure Cache for Redis to Azure Managed Redis. It produces a readiness assessment and an IaC target mapping; new resources ship through the normal workflow.
Use apex-azure-upgrade to check whether func-orders-prod is ready for Flex Consumption.apex-azure-quotas
Section titled “apex-azure-quotas”Checks quota headroom and regional SKU availability. The SKU availability check reports
AVAILABLE, RESTRICTED, NOT_OFFERED or UNKNOWN; the deploy agents run it before
deployment and escalate conflicts.
Use apex-azure-quotas to check whether Standard_D4s_v5 is available in swedencentral.apex-azure-cost-optimization
Section titled “apex-azure-cost-optimization”Finds savings from actual cost and utilization data. It queries and forecasts costs
through the Azure Resource Manager MCP tools, prices alternatives through Azure MCP pricing_get,
and writes reports to agent-output/{project}/. It falls back to the REST APIs only when an
MCP tool is unavailable, and storage findings start from Azure Advisor recommendations.
Use apex-azure-cost-optimization to show last month's cost by service for rg-myapp-prod.apex-azure-cloud-migrate
Section titled “apex-azure-cloud-migrate”Assesses AWS, GCP or other workloads for Azure and converts code. Deployment hands off
to apex-azure-prepare and the IaC workflow instead of running CLI deployment guides.
Use apex-azure-cloud-migrate to assess my AWS Lambda functions for Azure Functions.apex-azure-adr
Section titled “apex-azure-adr”Creates Architecture Decision Records following a structured template.
Document the decision to use Azure Front Door instead ofApplication Gateway as an ADR.apex-github-operations
Section titled “apex-github-operations”Full contribution lifecycle: branch naming, conventional commits, GitHub issues,
PRs, Actions, and releases. Uses gh CLI first for GitHub operations, with MCP fallback
under the owning skill’s tool contract. Commit and push remain explicitly requested operations.
@workspace What commit message format does this repo use?Create a GitHub issue for adding monitoring to the payment gateway.Label it with 'enhancement' and 'infrastructure'.apex-docs-writer
Section titled “apex-docs-writer”This historical product skill is retired at the site’s source pin. Published
documentation belongs to apex-docs. Use its writing guide
and checked-in unslop skill instead of invoking an absent product docs procedure.
apex-vendor-prompting
Section titled “apex-vendor-prompting”Manual-only vendor-specific prompt audits. The thin authoring instructions and automated vendor validators remain mandatory during ordinary agent edits; they do not require loading this extended audit workflow.
/apex-vendor-prompting Audit .github/agents/03-architect.agent.md without editing it.apex-terraform-search-import
Section titled “apex-terraform-search-import”Manual-only discovery and import planning for existing Azure resources. Invocation does not authorize Terraform state changes or apply; scope confirmation and import-only plan approval remain separate gates.
/apex-terraform-search-import Plan adoption of the selected resource group. Do not apply or change state.apex-unslop
Section titled “apex-unslop”Manual-only prose cleanup, adapted from Lauren Tan’s MIT-licensed Unslop skill in Cursor’s pstack plugin. Invoke it explicitly; it is not automatically loaded by agents or included as a required workflow step. Its small discovery metadata may still be available to the editor; manual-only does not mean zero context overhead.
/apex-unslop Review README.md for filler and unclear sentences. Do not edit files./apex-unslop Edit the selected draft paragraph for a technical audience.Preserve facts, citations, qualifications and terminology. The skill preserves required headings, identifiers, numbers and uncertainty. It does not edit approved or hash-reviewed artifacts as a style pass; proposed changes return to the owning agent for normal review. It neither detects AI authorship nor replaces technical validation. Source tests verify configuration and guardrail wording; native slash discovery and editing behavior still require runtime verification.
apex-azure-artifacts
Section titled “apex-azure-artifacts”Artifact template structures, H2 compliance rules, and documentation styling for all agent outputs (all steps).
@workspace What H2 headings are required in the implementation plan template?apex-context-management
Section titled “apex-context-management”Unified context-window management. Two modes: runtime compression
(full / summarised / minimal artefact tiers used by orchestrator and
codegen agents) and diagnostic audit (post-mortem token profiling
and hand-off gap analysis used by the 11-Context Optimizer agent).
Owns debug-log export and context-audit procedures. Authoring assessments live in
apex-agent-authoring; runtime data is never inferred from static checks.
@workspace What compression tiers does apex-context-management definefor the architecture assessment artifact?apex-golden-principles
Section titled “apex-golden-principles”The agent-first operating principles governing how agents work in this repository. See the canonical principles for governance invariants and philosophy.
@workspace What are the golden principles for agent behaviour?apex-iac-common
Section titled “apex-iac-common”Shared IaC patterns for deploy agents: CLI auth validation, deployment strategies, known issues, and governance-to-code property mapping.
@workspace What are the known deployment issues in apex-iac-common?apex-workflow-engine
Section titled “apex-workflow-engine”Machine-readable workflow DAG for the multi-step pipeline. Defines node
types, edge conditions, gates, and fan-out patterns. Owns shared workflow entry and
recovery. On Host, select 01-Orchestrator, invoke apex-host-workflow-start, and
explicitly choose resume to recover an existing project. It does not approve or
advance gates automatically. Site writing procedures belong to apex-docs.
@workspace Show the workflow graph edges and gate conditions.Subagents
Section titled “Subagents”Check the selected parent’s tool and helper declarations. A listed relationship does not establish that a helper ran. Use the pinned Explorer for the full inventory.
bicep-validate-subagent
Section titled “bicep-validate-subagent”Runs bicep lint and bicep build to validate template syntax, then reviews
templates against AVM standards, naming conventions, security baselines, and
best practices. Returns a structured PASS/FAIL + APPROVED/NEEDS_REVISION result.
bicep-whatif-subagent
Section titled “bicep-whatif-subagent”Runs az deployment group what-if to preview deployment changes. Analyzes
policy violations, resource changes, and cost impact. Returns a structured
change summary.
terraform-validate-subagent
Section titled “terraform-validate-subagent”Runs terraform fmt -check and terraform validate, then reviews
configs against AVM-TF standards, CAF naming conventions, security baselines,
and governance compliance. Returns a structured PASS/FAIL + APPROVED/NEEDS_REVISION
result.
terraform-plan-subagent
Section titled “terraform-plan-subagent”Runs terraform plan to preview infrastructure changes. Classifies resources
into create/update/destroy/replace, highlights destructive operations,
and returns a structured change summary.
cost-estimate-subagent
Section titled “cost-estimate-subagent”Queries Azure MCP pricing_get for retail SKU pricing, one decision per call for candidate comparisons. Compares regions
and returns a structured cost breakdown.
challenger-review-subagent
Section titled “challenger-review-subagent”The owner-approved October 19 candidate adapts this existing agent into the shared
read-only structured JSON leaf. Automatic producers, authorized Orchestrator
calls, and optional manual 10-Challenger reviews use the same leaf and
one-shot-review.md contract through a synchronous native APEX_REVIEW task.
The leaf reads bounded inputs and returns schema-conforming findings and its
verdict. It does not write files, run shell commands, ask questions, or delegate.
The interactive owner captures metadata before the task, records the actual
attributed output through record-review.mjs, then runs strict schema,
freshness, and provenance validation. New receipts identify the actual structured
leaf and hash its definition and the shared contract. Built-in rubber-duck
retains its critic-prose role, not a required JSON-producing role or fallback.
Final source and native runtime evidence remain pending. See
review finalization and recovery.
When validation fails
Section titled “When validation fails”Return the failure to the step that owns the artifact. A Deploy agent does not repair generated IaC itself.
- Copy the exact failing output from
bicep build, terraform validate,what-if, orterraform plan. - Select the owning main agent with that output and the affected artifact path.
- Re-check the generated files before moving to the next gate.
For environment or auth failures, start with Troubleshooting and Validation & Linting.
Tips and patterns
Section titled “Tips and patterns”Context priming
Section titled “Context priming”Before starting a complex workflow, open relevant files so Copilot has context:
- Open the requirements document (
01-requirements.md) - Open the architecture assessment (
02-architecture-assessment.md) - Then ask the IaC Planner agent to create the implementation plan
Chaining agents
Section titled “Chaining agents”Select the named main agents directly, or use 01-Orchestrator to coordinate
approved native task dispatch. Active migration definitions omit UI handoffs:
metadata. Keep 00-handoff.md and use explicit selection or the native task
result instead of waiting for buttons.
Directly selected Requirements, Architect, Design, and Governance can ask missing
material questions through their native question tools. Delegated main workers
return USER_INPUT_REQUIRED to the interactive parent. Leaves never ask users or
delegate. Same-task continuation depends on the actual native handle; one-shot
tasks do not imply a universal continuation API. See the
current source and runtime limits.

Recovering from errors
Section titled “Recovering from errors”If an agent produces incorrect output, use specific follow-up prompts:
The VNet address space conflicts with our on-premises range (10.0.0.0/8).Change the hub VNet to 172.16.0.0/16 and spoke VNets to 172.17.0.0/16.Working with existing infrastructure
Section titled “Working with existing infrastructure”Agents can work with existing deployments, not just greenfield projects:
I have an existing resource group rg-legacy-app-prod with 15 resources.Generate as-built documentation for this infrastructure.Review the existing Bicep templates in infra/bicep/legacy-app/and suggest improvements for WAF alignment.
